Book Summary:

This book examines an important issue facing America today the increasing influence of evangelical Christians in our Federal government and the erosion in the separation between Church and State. The election of George W. Bush secured a representative for the Christian right who was willing to effect government policies to reflect Christian values on issues such as gay marriage, stem-cell research, abortion, and others. More significantly, the importance of securing this group of voters was not lost on any of the presidential candidates in the upcoming 2008 election. From now on, every candidate will have to publicly express their faith and how it influences their lives and decisions. This book explores several questions posed by this shift in the balance between Church and State: Can we derive a moral code independent of God? Would a strong evangelical influence strengthen our government? Are democratic principles compatible with a theocracy? And more fundamental, does God really exist? How do we know?

THE WILL OF GOD: Re:The Presbyterian Church (USA) Book of Common Worship explores in general the theological topic of "the will of God," as revealed in Scripture, and particularly as treated in the liturgical and worship material in the BOOK OF COMMON WORHSIP. The more than 200 references to the subject in the BCW appear in the different rubrics for worship: adoration, confession, supplication, petition, and explication or explanation. The goal of the book is better to understand how God's will has been revealed, identified, and defined, as a step toward the more perfect worship God expects of the Church.

Book Summary:

New edition of a popular, biblically based guidebook exploring God’s will Does the Bible teach Christians to “find” God’s “special will” for their lives? No, it does not, says respected biblical scholar Bruce Waltke, contrary to much popular evangelical teaching. In this acclaimed book Waltke clearly distinguishes between pagan divination (“guessmancy”) and solid, Bible-based guidance as he distills from Scripture a six-point program to help guide Jesus followers on their life journey. This expanded and extensively rewritten second edition of Waltke’s Finding the Will of God incorporates the best insights from many other books on guidance that have appeared since the first edition came out (2002), and it includes an entirely new chapter on learning to protect one’s heart. This edition also features thoughtful questions for reflection at the end of each chapter.

Book Summary:

The success of Steve McVey’s books—beginning with the 225,000–selling Grace Walk—testifies to readers’ hunger to get free of performance–focused Christianity and rediscover the grace–filled, relational God of the Scriptures. The issue of God’s will confuses and frustrates many believers. Steve McVey helps and encourages them with key biblical principles: Focusing on rules, Christians end up anxious, hesitant, and distant from their compassionate Father. Focusing on God’s relationship with them, Christians will feel assured He is a Person to trust, not a formula to figure out. Believers can relax, knowing that God wants to guide them and has given them the life and mind of Christ. The result of the grace–based relationship? A bold, no–regrets life, lived in light of God’s complete dependability. This kind of life—the kind of life every Christian desires—is revealed in Walking in the Will of God.

Book Summary:

The title of this book is an expression of the following: Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing (acceptable) and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2, emphases added. The question that is paramount, is, “How do we discover this good and acceptable and perfect will?” And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from the Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts - deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds ... Colossians 3:15 (Amplified), emphases added. This verse expresses in a quite convincing way, the last word on discovering the will of God: Let the peace of God continually act as umpire in your hearts, deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds (Colossians 3:15, adapted). But this is not a privilege for anyone, as if it were some semi-magic trick to discover God’s will. It is premised upon a deep and meaningful personal relationship with Christ. That relationship is the result of the conversion experience, and results in a life of growing into Christ’s likeness—the process of sanctification. The expression of that life is then found in true Christian worship, with its commitment to God and the desire to live in obedience to Him—doing His will. That is the theme of this book.

Since then, she has evangelized God's healing love through her inner-healing ministry, praying at public events and individually for the healing of emotional childhood wounds. In 2011, Samia's deep faith and love for the Lord Jesus Christ was put to the ultimate test when she was diagnosed with horrific diseases that have aggressively attacked her spinal cord: primary progressive multiple sclerosis (M.S.), cervical stenosis, and myelopathy. Over a short span of time, she became severely disabled—unable to walk, write, or take care of her most basic needs—and suffered constant debilitating pain and overall weakness. Despite her severe disability, Samia neither lost her joy for life nor her inner-peace; her relentless faith persevered and grew stronger. She has selflessly continued her mission helping and ministering to others through her radio program and social media. Samia's story inspires others to look at the sufferings and challenges of their own life through spiritual eyes, shedding light on what's important, and giving purpose and value to what otherwise may seem meaningless in our physical world.

Christian America and the Kingdom of God

Book Summary:

The idea of the United States as a Christian nation is a powerful, seductive, and potentially destructive theme in American life, culture, and politics. Many fundamentalist and evangelical leaders routinely promote this notion, and millions of Americans simply assume the Christian character of the United States. And yet, as Richard T. Hughes reveals in this powerful book, the biblical vision of the "kingdom of God" stands at odds with the values and actions of an American empire that sanctions war instead of peace, promotes dominance and oppression instead of reconciliation, and exalts wealth and power instead of justice for the poor and needy. With conviction and careful consideration, Hughes reviews the myth of Christian America from its earliest history in the founding of the republic to the present day. Extensively analyzing the Old and New Testaments, Hughes provides a solid, scripturally-based explanation of the kingdom of God--a kingdom defined by love, peace, patience, and generosity. Throughout American history, however, this concept has been appropriated by religious and political leaders and distorted into a messianic nationalism that champions the United States as God's "chosen nation" and bears little resemblance to the teachings of Jesus. Pointing to a systemic biblical and theological illiteracy running rampant in the United States, Hughes investigates the reasons why so many Americans think of the United States as a Christian nation despite the Constitution's outright prohibition against establishing any national religion by law or coercion. He traces the development of fundamentalist Christianity throughout American history, noting especially the increased power and widespread influence of fundamentalism at the dawn of the twenty-first century, embodied and enacted by the administration of President George W. Bush and America's reaction to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Book Summary:

In the following pages an attempt has been made to examine anew in the light of God's Word some of the profoundest questions which can engage the human mind. Oth¬ers have grappled with these mighty problems in days gone by and from their labors we are the gainers. While mak¬ing no claim for originality the writer, nevertheless, has endeavored to examine and deal with his subject from an entirely independent viewpoint. We have studied diligently the writings of such men as Augustine and Acquinas, Calvin and Melancthon, Jonathan Edwards and Ralph Erskine, Andrew Fuller and Robert Haldane.* And sad it is to think that these eminent and honored names are almost entirely unknown to the present generation. Though, of course, we do not endorse all their conclusions, yet we gladly acknowledge our deep indebtedness to their works. We have purposely refrained from quoting freely from these deeply taught theologians, because we desired that the faith of our readers should stand not in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. For this reason we have quoted freely from the Scriptures and have sought to furnish proof texts for every statement we have advanced. Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Book Summary:

"May our love for the Sun, the will of God, be as strong as the sunflower's, so that even in days of hardship and sorrow we will continue to sail unerringly along the sea of life, following the directions of the barometer and compass of God's will that leads us to the safe haven of eternity." This is a thoroughly practical manual of the spiritual life focusing on the central goal of every Christian: learning the will of God and struggling to mold our life to it, just as Christ "humbled Himself and became obedient." (Phil. 2:8) Even more fundamentally, St John addresses the question of why we should care about God's will. Finally, the reader will find eternal wisdom running through these writings on questions of theodicy, free will, and Divine Providence. This work is reminiscent of the classic text Unseen Warfare in its historical genesis as an Orthodox redaction of an originally Roman Catholic text. First published in 1627 as The Heliotropium it was the work of a German Jesuit writer Jeremias Drexelius. The future St John adapted this text for an Orthodox audience as a student and then teacher at the Kiev Academy in the 1670's but it was not published until 1714, just a year before the author's death. This is the first English edition of St John's text, further edited and abbreviated for the contemporary reader.

Book Summary:

The American Crisis Thomas Paine - A pamphlet series originally published during the American Revolution. Paine, like many other politicians and scholars, knew that the Colonists weren't going to support the American Revolutionary War without proper reason to do so. The pamphlets were written in a language that the common man could understand, and represented Paine's liberal philosophy. He also used references to God. His writings bolstered the morale of the American colonists, appealed to the English people's consideration of the war with America, clarified the issues at stake in the war, and denounced the advocates of a negotiated peace. The first volume begins with the famous words 'These are the times that try men's souls.'

Book Summary:

Your will is constantly being engaged with daily decisions. It’s time you take control over the influences that have been directing your will! The advertising and marketing world have studied how we react to life for years, while most people turn and look the other way on the topic of the will. We have measured the will from a performance perspective for far too long while denying that the will is a part of our identity that connects us to God and constantly looking at what happens instead of examining why things happen. Becoming aware of the influences of the will allows us the freedom of pursuing God’s will and our life’s purpose. We no longer have to discuss free will without a clear perspective on how it relates to the responsibilities of freedom. It’s time to begin using our will to create God’s glory and call our purpose into order by acknowledging our dominion over our will and the relationships it engages. Hermon Cotton searches out the scriptures to explore what God has revealed to us about the influences of the will and how it relates to everyday life. This book is equipped with scripturally sound tools and insights for understanding the influences of the will’s impact on everyday life. You can align your desires, plans, and motives with God’s will for a purposeful and meaningful life. Plus, thoughtful moments are included with each main topic for reflection and application. The Thoughtful moments include a concluding concept, foundational scripture, and thoughtful questions that will reinforce your grasp on the influences on your will as you begin living to make God’s glory known. God doesn’t want you blind to marketing strategies that engage your will daily. He has already given you the identity of his child made in his image and likeness. Book Summary:

Through the centuries hard questions have been deliberated concerning God’s will. Understanding God’s will and how it theologically functions in relationship to man’s salvation can be a daunting task. Answering some of those questions from the Scriptures brings clarity and helps us understand the glorious God that we serve. Have you ever wondered: Does God love only the elect? If God does not desire the wicked to perish, is God’s will frustrated when the sinner goes his own way? Why is God seen as “repenting,” or “sad,” and even “changing His mind”?! What is “common grace,” and is it really found in the Bible? Does God desire things He does not decree, and does He decree things He does not desire? How many wills does God have? This book gives the Christian the proper hermeneutical tools to define “God’s will” and how that will works in and through redemptive history. It also aids the reader to distinguish between the two systems of Arminianism and Calvinism, and demonstrates why Arminianism and Hyper-Calvinism are biblically inconsistent.

Book Summary:

What does God say about homosexuality? How does this differ from what society says? Is homosexuality wrong? Does God hate gays? Rarely will you encounter a book which speaks both of the love of God and homosexuality. Homosexuality usually elicits blasts of judgment from the religious community, and not love. The Gaying of America and the Love of God reconciles these three seemingly opposing topics explaining how God views the behaviors of His most precious creation, humanity. Jesus’ response when confronted with sexual misgivings is telling of what the religious community’s attitude should be on this exploding topic. An examination of Abraham also reveals a surprising reaction from the patriarch of three of the world’s largest religions. What influence will gay marriage have on the fate of the United States of America? This book brings God’s perspective to this conversation, in an attempt to bring all communities together, including those in the LGBT community. A truly prophetic call to the church and to the modern world.

Book Summary:

There appears to be a hierarchy of cultures with the West perceiving the East as inferior, so much so that it is referred to simply as 'the Other'. Because today's world is globally interdependent, inter-woven, and integrative, it is pertinent to be open to the cultural, spiritual, and religious understandings of the East
